Not a difficult afternoon for Ajax at worrying FC Utrecht

Ajax won against FC Utrecht this afternoon without too much effort. It was 0-2 thanks to goals from Steven Berghuis and Brian Brobbey. The still unbeaten Ajax is therefore again the leader in the Eredivisie, while FC Utrecht continues to struggle with only two points from four matches.

After two years without an audience, spectators were again present at FC Utrecht – Ajax in the Nieuw-Galgenwaard stadium. After a spectacular turnout, the first half was rather tame. In the 8th minute Bas Dost became dangerous for the first time. His header, after a cross by Moussa Sylla, went over.

Three minutes later Ajax opened the scoring. Edson Alvarez extended a corner with his head to the far post where the detached Steven Berghuis headed in. His second goal for Berghuis this season. For Utrecht already the third goal this season from a corner. On the stroke of half-time, Berghuis provided the assist to Brian Brobbey’s 0-2. He also scored with the head.

There were few great chances to score in the second half. Steven Bergwijn had the greatest opportunity, but his shot went wide. The match was briefly interrupted in the second half, because referee Danny Makkelie stopped the match after a gigantic explosion of fireworks. The arbiter did not do that when jungle noises were heard after Brobbey’s 0-2. Incidentally, Brobbey and Schreuder told ESPN afterwards that they had not heard these sounds themselves during the game.

A setback for Ajax were the injuries that Devyne Rensch (before half-time) and Danny Blind (after half-time) sustained. Jurriën Timber also had to leave early in the final phase.

Thanks to the 2-0 win at FC Utrecht, Ajax is back at the top of the Eredivisie. The team of trainer Alfred Schreuder managed to win all four competition matches and is two points ahead of Feyenoord, which drew once.
