Wardell died at just 37 years old. He had won the Scottish championship two days earlier.

– I still don’t understand what happened, is this true, why was he taken now, so healthy and happy. I tried and tried (CPR) and EMS arrived within minutes, but his heart stopped and they couldn’t bring him back.

– My (heart) stopped at the same time. I love him so much and I need him here. I need him so much but he’s gone. I cannot describe this pain, Archibald continued.

Wardell appeared on the BBC program on Monday night, where he talked about his victory. He had cycled to victory, even though he suffered three flat tires during the race.

– To be honest, it was a bit of a disaster, but I just kept racing, Wardell said on the show.
