Ukrainian army thanks beachgoer in Crimea for photo at Russian defense system | Abroad

“Maybe we are too strict with Russian tourists… Sometimes they can be very helpful,” the Ukrainian army tweeted Monday about a round-bellied beachgoer on the peninsula occupied by Moscow since 2014. “Like this man taking pictures of Russian air defense positions near Yevpatoria, in occupied Crimea. Thank you and keep up the good work!” The man had posted the photo on the Russian ‘Facebook’ VKontakte.

Citizen journalists also needed little time to find out the exact location via the photo, international media report. A Moscow governor in Crimea warned Russian tourists on Telegram this weekend not to distribute images of Russian military vehicles.

Explosions

After several attacks from unknown quarters, the situation in Crimea, believed to be safe, is on the rise. It is still unclear how exactly targets on the peninsula were hit, and with what. It may be actions by Ukrainian partisans in the area, for example with drones. For example, the headquarters of the Russian navy in Sevastopol was said to have been hit on Friday, but the damage was not too bad.

It is not known whether the S-400 system in question was attacked. The government in Kiev has not officially commented on the news, nor on the previous explosions in Crimea. President Volodimir Zelensky has indicated that he wants to recapture the annexed area.
