She died last Thursday in London at a care home for people from the entertainment industry, her manager said.
The actress played numerous small roles in films and series since 1959, but became best known for her portrayal of Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Warden in Keeping up appearancesthe iconic sitcom that appeared in the Netherlands Clean appearance is called.
Elizabeth is the neighbor of main character Hyacinth Bucket (‘it’s Bouquet!’) and always nervous in front of the perfectionist snob. For example, she always does everything she can not to mess or cause damage to Hyacinth’s expensive tea service, but that usually happens because of her extreme nervousness.
Later, between 2003 and 2010, she also had a major role in the sitcom Last of the summer wine. More famous names from the British comedy world appeared in it at a later age, including Frank Thornton (Captain Peacock from Are you being served?) and Brian Murphy (George Roper from Man about the house and George and Mildred).
Josephine Tewson is far from the first cast member of Clean appearance that dies. Clive Swift, who played Hyacinth’s haunted husband Richard, died in 2019. Geoffrey Hughes, known for his role as Onslow, passed away in 2012. Colleague Mary Millar, the second actress to play Rose, passed away in 1998. Leading actor Patricia Routledge will turn 94 next year.
