Should Brandenburg have sounded the alarm earlier?

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Environment Minister Till Backhaus (63, SPD) put his finger on the wound at a press conference on the Oder fish dying on Friday.

The reason: the atypical measured values should have been noticed at the measuring station in Frankfurt (Oder)! Backhaus: “There is the Oder alarm plan, and the headquarters are in Frankfurt. And the responsibility is therefore also located on the German side in Brandenburg.”

Between August 7th and 9th, the readings for electrical conductivity, among other things, at the Frankfurt (O.) measuring station fluctuated dramatically

When asked by the BZ, a spokeswoman added: “The damage event is also clearly reflected in the series of measurements from this measuring point.”

► Fact: Between August 7th and 9th, oxygen levels, electrical conductivity and pH suddenly went through the roof! Only there were no immediate warnings from the state. Later, however, serious allegations were made against the Polish authorities because they had not informed about the Oder drama in good time.

Or did Poison Wave survive

Meanwhile there is good news: the Oder is not dead! The fishing association and the Institute for Inland Fisheries Potsdam found this out yesterday during a test catch.

Lars Dettmann (54) from the fishing association: “We found fish across the spectrum of species. They were alert, fit and healthy.”

There is still no solution to the mystery of what caused the fish to die. The state laboratory has now found pesticides in the water near Frankfurt (Oder)!

However, the concentration was too low to be solely responsible for the death of the fish.

In the further investigations into the polluter, satellite images could soon be evaluated.
