Janssen with a supporting role in the discus final

Henrik Janssen only played a supporting role in the European Championship decision in the discus throw.

The 24-year-old missed the final by around two meters on Friday evening with 61.11 m and finished tenth. The Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna secured the title with a championship record (69.78) ahead of the Slovenian world champion Kristjan Ceh (68.28) and the British Lawrence Okoye (67.14).

Curious: in 2002, when the European Championships were also held in Munich’s Olympic Stadium, Alekna’s father Virgilijus won the silver medal. Mykolas Alekna, now 19, was born a month and a half later. Virgilijus Alekna has twice won Olympic and World Championship gold in his career. In 2006 he was crowned European champion in Gothenburg, like his son now.

Torben Brandt (Berlin/56.33) stayed well below the required 66.00 m in qualifying and was eliminated. Martin Wierig (Magdeburg), team captain of the German Athletics Association (DLV) in Munich, canceled his start due to knee problems.
