Madonna: “Enough Love: 50 Number Ones” (Review & Stream)

The number in the title is not a lie, Madonna has had 50 number one hits on the American Dance Club Songs chart from “Billboard” so far – a record. Her first was 1982’s “Holiday,” her last being “I Don’t Search I Find” in 2019. Madonna never needed DJs and remixers to be good — she needed them to be modern. It started with Jellybean Benitez, then came Nile Rodgers, Stephen Bray, Timbaland, Pharrell Williams and Diplo. The strongest years of these producers were also the strongest years of Madonna: when French house was out, she hired Mirwais for “Music” anyway, and French house was back in, Mirwais too. That’s called counterintuition.

A pretty confident statement

The singles from four decades demonstrate the change in the demand for variations made especially for the dance floor. At first they consisted mainly of rhythmically amplified preparations – later only of abstractions. Maxi singles of the early 80s put the instruments of the original in the foreground (“Into The Groove”), since the early 90s remixes have predominated, emphasizing the handwriting of the celebrity at the mixer, who makes the piece his own – ” Girl Gone Wild” by Avicii or “Justify My Love” by William Orbit.

The collection is advertised with unknown versions from Madonna’s compilation “You Can Dance”, which fell in 1987 during a peak period for maxi-single albums (Phil Collins: “12″ers”, Janet Jackson: “Control: The Remixes”). From this year, all Madonna albums will be released in deluxe editions – for the first time since the beginning of her career. That’s long overdue, because the reissue craze has been raging for at least 15 years. However, the regular US singles charts are more important than the dance charts celebrated here. Not to start with the new release of a well-known studio album, but with a best-of, whose 50 songs ruled side shows? That’s a pretty confident statement.
