A lot is at stake for PSV against Rangers FC

The interests are great for PSV in the diptych with Rangers FC. Besides the fact that the team really wants to play football in the Champions League, there are also many millions at stake. And especially watch out for right back James Tavernier.

With the victory over AS Monaco, PSV can already add five million euros. That could become a lot more if Rangers FC is eliminated.

  • Clubs that qualify for the group stage of the Champions League will receive 15.64 million without playing a minute.
  • They also receive extra millions through TV money, receipts and a bonus from the football association UEFA. The amount can thus rise to 35 million.
  • In addition, a victory in the group stage of the Champions League brings the club 2.8 million euros.
  • If PSV overwinter in the Champions League, just like in 2016, it may add another ten million euros.

The difference with the Europa League, the tournament in which PSV plays if it loses to Rangers FC, is big. The starting premium in the second European tournament is ‘only’ 3.6 million and a victory yields the club 630,000 euros.

Before that happens, Rangers FC must first be defeated. The Scots qualified for the final of the Europa League last season. In this the German Eintracht Frankfurt was too strong.

Rangers survived the previous qualifying round of the Champions League at the expense of the Belgian Union Sint Gillis. What was striking is that the Scots mainly rely on the game for their own audience.

Rangers lost 2-0 in Belgium. But in an atmospheric Ibrox Stadium, Rangers won 3-0.

One man to keep an eye on at Rangers FC is James Tavernier. The right-back finished last football season with both goals and assists in double figures. The big question will therefore be how PSV will defend him. On the other hand, there will be more space for Cody Gakpo on the left, because Tavernier can often be found in the opponent’s half.

The first game in Scotland is scheduled for Tuesday evening. PSV will have to survive that match and limit any damage.

The decision will be made in Eindhoven next Wednesday. PSV can perfectly prepare for the return after Tuesday evening’s game. The team has been given a weekend off during the competition.
