Marrit Steenbergen also won the gold medal in the 200-meter freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Rome on Sunday. The 22-year-old Dutchman rushed to a personal best in 1.56.36.
Earlier this tournament, Steenbergen won gold in the 100-meter freestyle, the 4×200-meter freestyle and the 4×100-meter mixed medley. She won bronze in the 4x100m freestyle.
Maaike de Waard seized the bronze medal in the 50 meter backstroke. The 25-year-old Dutch touched in the final after 27.54 seconds.
Only Analia Pigree from France (27.27) and the Italian Silvia Scalia (27.53) set a faster time than De Waard. Kira Toussaint, the 2021 European champion, finished fourth in 27.73. Earlier this tournament, De Waard already won bronze in the 50-meter butterfly.
The native of Vlaardingen did not qualify for the final in the 100-meter butterfly. De Waard finished eighth in her semi-final in 59.46. There was less than half an hour between the final in the 50-meter backstroke and the semi-final in the 100-meter butterfly.
Tessa Giele also missed the final battle in the 100-meter butterfly. Her time of 58.71 marked sixth place in her run.
Tess Schouten just missed the final in the 200-meter breaststroke. The 21-year-old Dutch recorded the fifth time in her semi-final (2.26.68).
Korstanje grabs next to medal
Nyls Korstanje failed to win a medal in the 100-meter butterfly. The 23-year-old Dutchman finished seventh.
Korstanje was the first to return in the final, but was unable to maintain his leading position. With his time of 51.79 he only kept the Portuguese Diogo Ribeiro (52.28) behind him. The gold went to the Hungarian Kristof Milak (50.33), for Noe Ponti from Switzerland (50.87) and the Pole Jakub Majerski (51.22).
Korstanje finished fourth in the 50-meter butterfly on Friday. He won gold with the mixed relay team in the 4×100 meter medley.
Luc Kroon failed to qualify for the final in the 200-meter freestyle. In the semi-final he did not get further than seventh place.
