Swimming EM in Rome: Popovici swims the world record over 100 meters freestyle

Romanian David Popovici set a world record in the 100m freestyle at the European Championships in Rome.

The 17-year-old beat César Cielo after 46.86 seconds when he won the final on Saturday (13.08.2022), five hundredths of a second faster than César Cielo at his old record. The Brazilian had held the record since the 2009 World Cup.

After his success, Popovici was celebrated with chants by the fans at the outdoor pool in the Foro Italico. So far there had not been a world record at this European Championship.

Gose after silver over 800 meters also over 200 meters in the final

After winning the silver medal in the 800m freestyle, Isabel Gose also made it through to the final in the 200m. The 20-year-old from Magdeburg finished second in the semifinals after 1:57.70 minutes. “It was the plan to swim at such a time, everything was great”said Gose.

After winning her first individual medal on the long track on Friday night, Gose was celebrated by the team.

Synchronized swimming: Bojer and Zimmer with the best German EM result

After seventh place in the solo, synchronized swimmer Marlene Bojer achieved another German best in a duet with Michelle Zimmer at the European Championships in Rome. The duo from Munich and Berlin came in eighth in the Free Freestyle with 83.6667 points, the best German placing at a European Championship in this discipline. Gold went to Maryna and Wladyslawa Alexijiwa from Ukraine.
