One dead and dozens injured at the Medusa Festival when a sand storm breaks out

A young man of 28 years old has died and twenty-one people have been injured when part of the collapsed main stage and the structure of the entrance to the venue which hosts since last Wednesday the jellyfish festivalon the beach of Cullera in Valencia. The fatal accident has been produced by gale force that has been unleashed around four o’clock this morning in the enclosure and that has led to a sandstorm.

Sources consulted by Raise-EMVa media outlet of the Prensa Ibérica group to which this newspaper also belongs, have clarified that nine people are serious and have been evacuated in ambulances to different Valencia hospitals and that of La Ribera, in Alzira.

The others 12 injured have suffered minor injuriesfor what they have been cared for on the spot by the different health teams and have not required hospitalization.

Sandstorm with gusts of 65 km/h

According to various information, the gusts of wind have reached 65 kilometers per hour. In this sense, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has indicated that “tonight there have been hot blowouts with very strong gusts of wind and sudden rises in temperature.” This phenomenon is also known as ‘esclafit càlid’: they are brief episodes of skyrocketing temperatures in which the arrival of a very intense gust of wind hits an area of ​​dry land.

The spectators have recorded the moment with their ‘smartphone’ and in the videos published on social networks it can be seen how several parts of the structure from the stage they fly to high speed.

As soon as the accident occurred, the Civil Guard and the Cullera Local Police evacuated in just a few minutes the whole enclosure where the concerts were being held, while the health teams treated and evacuated the more seriously injured to various hospitals.

The Medusa Festival began last Wednesday, but until this Friday night the main poster of the event did not perform. It had to last until Sunday. However, the organization of the festival, one of the most important in the Valencian Community, has informed through its Instagram profile of the suspension of the planned performances due to “inclement weather” and to “guarantee the safety” of the attendees.
