Mariska Bauer recovers after a stroke, but the road is long

The year had just begun when disaster struck Mariska Bauer (46). Frans Bauer’s wife suffered a stroke. It is now much better, although the road to the old Mariska is long and full of bumps, she told the Telegraaf in an interview.

Mariska looks in for the first time the conversation with the newspaper back on that January 4th. Things went wrong when she called someone and struggled to say her name. Because she wasn’t feeling well either, she and Frans decided to drive to the doctor.

He thought it was an allergic reaction and prescribed medication. But on the way to the pharmacy at the hospital, Mariska continued to go downhill. They didn’t trust it in the hospital either. She was admitted and at an MRI scan the next morning the diagnosis was made: a cerebral infarction.

First 24 hours
At that time it was not clear how Mariska would come out, she tells the newspaper. The doctors didn’t even know what her life expectancy was and emphasized how important the first 24 hours were. Especially because there could be another infarction over it.

It didn’t get that far in the end and Mariska has been working hard on her recovery in recent months. That was not always easy. She describes a visit to the supermarket as hell and the first time out to dinner was anything but relaxed.

French in the kitchen
She no longer suffers from this, although she says she is not the old one yet. Fortunately, Mariska, with her husband Frans and four sons, has enough helping hands at home. She says that the boys now help with the laundry, change the beds and are also good at cooking.
