Regional heat wave is a fact, hot and muggy weekend ahead | NOW

Thanks to expected tropical temperatures, we officially have a nationwide heat wave this weekend. This was already a fact in many places regionally today. In the Gelderse Hupsel, thirty degrees was passed at 11.30 am on Friday morning, which officially means a regional heat wave. The whole country can count on sunny and warm days this weekend, with a pretty muggy Sunday.

For a heat wave, it must be at least 25 degrees for at least five days in a row. On three of those days it must be tropical warm, or at least 30 degrees. In Hupsel, the heat wave started on Monday with the first day of summer. During the week the temperature rose and Friday the thirty degrees was passed for the third time in five days.

The heat wave can already be reached in the places of Westdorpe, Woensdrecht, Eindhoven, Volkel and Maastricht on Friday. Nationally, this only happens a day later.

In De Bilt, the mercury touched 25 degrees for the first time on Tuesday this week. On Wednesday and Thursday it was over 30 degrees, Friday and Saturday temperatures above 30 degrees are also expected. It is the thirtieth time that the Netherlands has found itself in a heat wave, since the measurements started in 1901.

In many eastern and southern regions, it was already more than 25 degrees on Monday. There will therefore already be a regional heat wave there today, because it can reach 34 degrees regionally. It is only slightly less warm in the far north of the country, in parts of North Holland and in the Wadden area. This is due to the cooling effect of the seawater.

Saturday it can again be more than 34 degrees. It will also be tropical warm on the beach. A moderate easterly wind provides some cooling.

With temperatures up to 35 degrees, Sunday can get even warmer. Meteorologists from Weather Plaza warn of a much more muggy day than other hot days this week.

It has to do with the turning of the wind. The air turns to more southerly directions and pushes very warm, but also moist air towards the land from the Atlantic Ocean.

Many shooting stars can be seen in the night from Friday to Saturday

In the coming night the Perseids meteor shower will also pass by. The swarm of shooting stars comes every year around this time in August.

Under good conditions, sixty to eighty shooting stars per hour can be seen at the peak. This time, the conditions to witness the spectacular spectacle are not ideal. That’s because of the full moon, so it’s not dark enough. The best time to spot the meteors is between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. tonight.
