Marco Komenda (18th) and Benedikt Pichler (59th, penalty kick) scored for Kiel. Jason Ceka (43rd) scored the goal for Magdeburg after the yellow-red card for Jamie Lawrence (57th) acted outnumbered.

Kiel shakes off the cup frustration

The Kielers had not managed to get beyond a draw on the first two matchdays, and the North Germans had failed in the first round of the cup at the third division Waldhof Mannheim. Magdeburg was also eliminated against Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt.

After Magdeburg had dominated the first few minutes against Kiel, a largely balanced game developed. After a corner kick, Komenda scored the opener for Holstein.

Dismissal and penalty goal decisive in the end

Magdeburg struggled at first, but equalized with Ceka. Even after the break, both teams started with speed. Lawrence finally brought down Steven Skrzybski in the penalty area and had to be sent off.

The Magdeburg defender had previously received a yellow card for a swallow. Pichler then safely converted the penalty.

Magdeburg travels to FC St. Pauli on the 4th matchday on Sunday (14.08.2022), Kiel plays against Braunschweig the day before.
