There was never a dull moment in the far north at the match between FC Groningen and FC Volendam. The visitors seemed to run into a sore throat in the first Eredivisie match in thirteen years, but dragged a point out of the fire. “As a coach, I enjoyed the match,” Wim Jonk says afterwards.
FC Volendam faced a 2-0 deficit within the first half hour. The Volendammers were put on display like a child. It was Daryl van Mieghem who took his team by the hand with a goal. After the break he put a corner kick to the head of Benaissa Benamar and even had the winning one on his foot with a ball on the post. “If you see how we come back after a 2-0 deficit, we are just playing a good pot,” said Van Mieghem.

The moment the game turned around, Henk Veerman came on as a substitute. The striker came in the lines in the 38th minute and that gave the visitors a boost. “I didn’t want to wait, because otherwise you can concede a goal before halftime. Then the match will be turned upside down,” says Jonk, who saw Veerman start strongly.
