New terms and conditions at RTL + indicate price increases

At the moment, many providers across all industries are increasing their prices. The latest changes to the terms and conditions of the streaming service RTL + give reason to believe that a price increase will soon be forthcoming.

Due to the current market situation, also caused by inflation, many providers have already adjusted their prices upwards. There were a few signs before the much-discussed price increase on Amazon Prime. Some of these are now also emerging on RTL+ within the new terms and conditions. Will the streaming service cost more soon?

New terms and conditions at RTL +

The provider RTL+, formerly TV Now, will change its general terms and conditions on August 16, 2022. Among other things, there are some innovations with regard to the technical requirements, since RTL + is positioning itself more broadly here. In the future, only private individuals will be able to take out an RTL+ subscription, not companies.

Of particular interest, however, are the changes to the terms and conditions, which RTL+ titled “explained reasons under which circumstances we can lower or raise our prices”. Among other things, the prices may be changed if, for example, the operating costs increase. According to the General Terms and Conditions of RTL+ This may be the case if the costs for production and licenses or for personnel and infrastructure are higher. There is therefore plenty of scope for a possible planned price increase, since the costs are likely to be higher in all areas due to inflation.

Similar procedure with Amazon Prime

At the end of July 2022, Amazon Prime also publicly raised its prices. The increase was already apparent in advance – due to the adjustments to the terms and conditions of the shipping giant. Amazon formulated it very similarly at the time, as RTL+ does now.

“An increase in the membership fee can be considered and a reduction in the membership fee must be made (…) in order to pass on the cost increases and/or cost savings that arise for us, which are based on external circumstances that are beyond our control and which relate to the specific costs of the Prime service in your country.”

Amazon

An upward price adjustment for RTL+ would not come as a surprise. The Premium tariff currently costs EUR 4.99 per month, while the Premium Duo costs EUR 7.99 per month. There is also an advertising-supported free offer. Those prices are still below those of most of its competitors. Regardless of the external circumstances, RTL + could also raise its prices because the streaming service is now increasingly relying on its own productions. So far there is no official statement from the provider.
