Saga Vanninen secured the heptathlon gold medal in the final event at 800 meters at the Under-20 World Championships in Colombia.

– Those results are disappointing, but otherwise quite good, Vanninen commented on the championship.

Vanninen won the championship with 6084 points and Germany with a difference of 210 points To Serine Riedel.

Vanninen’s winning streak was: 100 meters hurdles 13.52, high jump 172, shot put 14.18, 200 meters 24.49, long jump 624, javelin throw 46.21 and 800 meters 2.28.91. Vanninen, representing Tampere Pyrintö, set his record in the hurdles and 200 meters. With those runs, he corrected a low high jump and kept his level consistently high in the second day’s events.

– Doing the high jump was technically uncertain. The result was quite disappointing. I thought that I would make such a time in the 200 meters that I would be compensated for it, repeated Vanninen, representing Tanpereen Pyrintö.

– We had “Masan” (coach Matti Liimatainen) with the fact that the runner-up will go, but of course it’s a different matter to make it succeed in the competition.

Last year, Vanninen won European Championship gold and World Championship gold in the under-20-year-old honors competition.
