Winning the competition, beating hundreds of drawings, was a little girl, Orla, who in choosing the subject of her postcard was immediately on the safe side: she drew a nice corgi, Elizabeth’s favorite dog breedaccompanying it with a congratulatory message, two imperial crowns, the British Union Jack and the words “70 years”.
An area very dear to the queen
The chosen postcard was sent to Buckingham Palace shortly before the celebrations began by Simon Fell, MP from Barrow-in-Furness, County Cumbria, where the school is located, and on behalf of its 88,000 residents. The area was among the first places visited by the young Elizabeth after her Coronation in June 1953and the queen returned there on several occasions in her 70-year reign.
The response of the sovereign
The response of the sovereign was not long in coming. In a letter with the iconic Royal stamp and signed by Victoria Tuke, head of Elizabeth’s private office at Buckingham Palace, the monarch thanked the child and the school for the kind thought, reciprocating with her wishes for the year of the Platinum Jubilee.
