FIFA referee Deniz Aytekin will end his international career prematurely. Personal reasons were decisive for the decision.
Aytekin will no longer represent the DFB on the international stage. However, the renowned referee, who was recently named DFB referee of the year 2022, will remain in the national competitions.
“Over the past few days I’ve been talking intensively with my family and friends about the future of my international refereeing work. As a result, it feels right that I’m retiring as a FIFA referee after twelve years.”Aytekin is quoted on the DFB homepage.
“More time for family and friends”
He has already informed Roberto Rosetti, who is responsible for refereeing at UEFA, of the decision. Since 2011, the 44-year-old has made 25 appearances in the Champions League, 29 in the Europa League and 23 in international matches.
“The main reason is that I want to spend more time with my family and friends. In addition, international travel is too time-consuming and physically demanding and makes self-determination difficult.”said Aytekin.
The sporting perspective of his German colleagues also played a role: “We also have very good experienced Bundesliga referees who deserve a chance to officiate international games as well.”Aytekin continues.
