RoosterSea Life Blankenberge is currently looking after a cute gray seal pup, barely two to three weeks old. The animal, with its white fur completely in Christmas theme, crawled over the seawall in De Haan on Thursday evening and descended towards the parking lot at Christianaplein. “Perhaps looking for his mother. Hopefully he will soon learn to eat solid food,” says nurse Dali De Meester of Sea Life.
The people of the NorthSealTeam, a non-profit organization that monitors seals on the beach and keeps walkers away, had been keeping an eye on the young gray seal on the beach for two days. This is where the puppies are born during this period. It takes several weeks before they can swim, catch fish and go their separate ways. But to swim, they must first get rid of their white, water-permeable fur. In the meantime, they strengthen themselves with breast milk. “But the puppy had been alone for several days. It was hoped that the mother would return one day. We don’t know where the mother is,” says Dali De Meester.
Could have ended worse
However, the people of the NorthSealTeam saw the animal walking across the seawall around 9.30 pm on Thursday and notified Sea Life. The fire station Wenduine came on site to catch and transfer it. The puppy had already passed the seawall by then and descended towards Christianaplein, where cars and buses drive. Had no one seen it, it would probably have been worse.
Still in critical phase
“The puppy, a male, is in relatively good condition but is still in the critical phase. He must learn to eat solid foods as soon as possible to increase his chances of survival. The video still shows how it tries to suck. Hopefully it will go quickly now,” animal caretaker Dali continues.
“Once they eat fish, the seals go to the outdoor pool. When they have reached the weight of about 30 kilos – if everything goes well within about a month and a half – we release the puppies back into the wild,” concludes Dali De Meester.
