Of course, when it comes to Prince and Farben, everyone thinks of “Purple” because of “Purple Rain”, his most successful album. Already in the “1999” era of 1982, he made today’s hipster color socially acceptable. As is now being claimed, purple was not the musician’s favorite color at all.
Cloud Guitar in Orange
Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson (who once colored an album with “Royal Blue”) revealed the singer’s actual preference: orange. Nelson told the New York Times: “It’s weird, people always associate the color purple with Prince. But his favorite color was orange.”
In fact, Prince was late in using the color orange prominently as a garment, at least on stage (the photo dates to 2007). However, early on he played an orange Telecaster guitar with black smudges (seen on “Computer Blue” in the movie “Purple Rain” and also pictured above).
In 1987 he sang in “U Got The Look”: “Color You Peach and Black” and asked concert-goers to come in the peachy-black combo, in “Sign ‘O’ The Times” style. Peach color comes closest to orange.
