Last round of WSV’30 old paper team: “We were one of the biggest sponsors”

It was a familiar sight in Wormer for twelve years: the bus of the waste paper team of the local football club WSV’30, which drove around the village every Monday and Tuesday. The volunteers rode their last lap this morning. “In those twelve years we have brought in at least 150,000 euros for the club,” says coordinator Gerard Mak proudly.

Early in the morning Gerard Mak and Floor Twisk arrive at the complex for their last lap. On the way they pick up Willem Binken and then they can start. Jan Klos is already busy as a ‘forerunner’: he collects the old paper and places it at central points for the men on the bus.

Flyer

In the early days, of course, there was still a lot to gain in publicity. “In the end we managed to reach the entire village by flyering,” says Mak. “That led to two full containers per week and that yields 15,000 to 20,000 euros on an annual basis.”

The decision to quit did not come out of the blue. The team of volunteers had already shrunk and due to health problems it will shrink even more soon. In addition, some nasty things have happened at the football complex recently. For example, the bus in which the men collected the paper was once broken open. That also happened with the container, making it a big mess there.

“People are also getting a little easier,” Mak adds. “They throw their rubbish on the street and don’t look at what’s in between. There’s a lot in between and that doesn’t make the work any easier. They are all reasons why we think it’s enough after twelve years.”

Still, the pride dominates: “That you have brought in so many kilos of paper and thus supported your club. We were one of the biggest sponsors. I think people will miss it too, because they found it easy to put their old paper outside. to put.”
