Bratislava (dpa) – goalkeeper oldie Johannes Bitter rules out a return to the German national handball team.
“I made the decision last summer that it was over. I don’t expect such a crazy tournament to take place again,” said the 39-year-old after the DHB selection’s 30:29 victory in the last European Championship game against Russia.
Bitter had stepped in again at the tournament in Hungary and Slovakia because the two regular goalkeepers Andreas Wolff and Till Klimpke had tested positive for the corona virus. The possible successors Joel Birlehm and Silvio Heinevetter then canceled for private or health reasons.
Bitter completed a total of five European Championship games, in which he formed a team with Daniel Rebmann from Göppingen, who was also subsequently nominated. For the journey home on Wednesday, the goalkeeper from Bundesliga promoted HSV Hamburg only had one wish: “Now we hope that we will all come home healthy. I’m looking forward to the negative PCR test tomorrow morning in Germany.”
