Mobile games on the rise
The numbers in mobile gaming have been increasing for years. According to current data, not only the games market itself has grown internationally and in Germany. Especially in the field of mobile devices – smartphones, tablets and consoles – the curve is pointing steeply upwards. Overall, the smartphone clearly leads as the most popular gaming device.
Felix Falk, Managing Director of the Association of the German Games Industry, says about the current developments:
Around half of gamers in Germany play on their smartphones every day or almost every day. The technical accessibility, the large selection of games and the wide range of free, so-called free-to-play titles make mobile gaming more and more popular in everyday life. Since almost everyone now owns a smartphone, the gaming world often opens up for many incidentally.

The following eleven mobile games have at least a rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars (as of July 2022) and over ten million downloads in the Google Play Store. One or the other game is quite well known, others not so much and can therefore be a good inspiration for mobile gamers.
Tiles Hop: EDM Rush! (over 100 million) – 4.1 stars
The Jump’n’Run game, designed as an endless game, is all about one thing: the music. The ball has to bounce from tile to tile by tapping and dragging for a long time. It is important to hit the tiles exactly and, if necessary, to collect the objects lying on them. With “Tiles Hop: ESM Rush!” (what a bulky title), each player can upload their own music, which is then used as a basis for creating new Levels to go with it. The ball then bounces to match the beat.
Mario Kart Tour (over 100 million) – 4.1 stars
The popular racing game from Nintendo also got an offshoot as a mobile game in 2019. Players can race with each other on several racetracks. Up to eight players can compete against each other with changing rules, characters and vehicles. Developer Nintendo regularly delivers new routes, items and much more. In-app purchases are possible, the mobile game does not contain any advertising so far.
Hunter Assassin (over 100M) – 4.1 stars
As the title suggests, Hunter Assassin is all about throwing off the hunters by letting the little knife-wielding avatar, controlled by the player, reach the shooters from behind. You move through a small mini-maze and have to stay out of the detection angle of the hunters. As the level increases, there are also more hunters in the labyrinth and sometimes you have to dash around the next corner very quickly in order not to be discovered. If one of their comrades is hit nearby, the hunters will hear this, be there quickly and shoot at you. The aim is to eliminate all opponents as quickly as possible and without being discovered.
Gardenscapes (over 100M) – 4.3 stars
“Gardenscapes” basically works like “Candy Crush”: In small mini-games, at least three objects of the same type and color must be pushed next to each other. A specific goal is set for each level. Successful completion of each level gives you stars that can be used to buy new items for the house and garden you have inherited, trim hedges and clear stones out of the way. The aim of the game is to restore the garden to its full glory. The game rightly received a good rating, but the advertising, which generates a completely different game concept, was also criticized.
U.N! (over 100 million) – 4.3 stars
The popular card game is also available as a mobile game. Whether traveling alone or at home with the family – everything is possible thanks to different game modes. The reviews report authentic gaming fun, but also a lot of advertising.
Ludo King (over 500 million) – 4.2 stars
The app is based on the Ludo board game, better known in Germany under the name “Mensch annoy you not”. Four players play against each other by moving their colour-coded game pieces across the board depending on the number of pips on the dice thrown. At the end, all four stones of a game should have circled the board and arrive in the middle. The mobile game offers different modes in which you can either play against a computer at different levels of difficulty or online against real users.
Wooden block puzzle (over 50 million) – 4.4 stars
In “Holzblock Puzzle” the name says it all. In ready-made mini-levels, the blocks placed at the bottom of the screen have to be inserted into the picture. So the concept is relatively simple and self-explanatory, but at some point the levels are definitely not anymore. The game is perfect for in between, can be paused at any time and is aimed primarily, but not exclusively, at puzzle fans.
Pokémon GO (over 100 million) – 4.1 stars
When playing Pokémon, who hasn’t wished to catch the little pocket monsters in real life? The mobile game “Pokémon GO” makes this possible in part. On the way you meet a lot of the small and big creatures with your smartphone. Buildings such as train stations or churches act as arenas in the game where players can compete against each other. A nice side effect of the catching fun is that by collecting items on the way, the environment is perceived and explored differently.

Subway Surfers (over 1 billion) – 4.6 stars
Subway Surfers is the next platformer on the list. The concept is also based on a never-ending course across tracks and tunnels. The player has to dodge approaching trains, jump over obstacles and collect as many coins as possible. There’s also catchy feel-good music and addictive sound effects. By the way, with over a billion downloads in the Play Store, the game leads in this category of our ten top mobile games.
Roblox (over 500M) – 4.4 stars
In “Roblox” players can create their own game worlds by constructing them themselves with Lego-like building blocks. Other players can then visit and move around in these worlds. The concept is very similar to that of “Minecraft”, but “Roblox” came onto the market three earlier – in 2006. To this day, the app enjoys great popularity despite its age and – in contrast to “Minecraft” – with the Installation free. In the game, however, there is the virtual currency Robux, which can be purchased for real money and used to buy clothing and so-called game passes.
Happy Color – Paint by Numbers (over 100M) – 4.5 stars
Anyone who loves painting by numbers is well advised to use this app. Hundreds of ready-made images are already available, divided into categories such as “Food”, “Nature”, “Fashion”, “Art” or “Sport”. New images are also appearing every day, sometimes in paid packages such as the Marvel superheroes. The majority is available for free, however, hints can be earned by watching promotional videos. The colors available for selection are numbered at the bottom of the screen. If you tap on one of them, the areas to be painted are marked in grey.
Brain Test: Tricky Puzzles (over 100 million) – 4.5 stars
The puzzle game has the highest rating on our list with 4.7 stars. The second part even has 4.9 stars, but also significantly fewer downloads so far. Each level presents a different puzzle, none of which are the same. While one involves tricky counting, another requires advanced logic.
