The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, met this week with Antonio Banderas at the Royal Post Office, seat of the regional government, to approach different projects of cultural content.
At the meeting, which was also attended by the actor’s brother, Javier Banderas, and the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, they discussed “the good times the Community is experiencing and its ability to attract large international projects“, as reported by the Madrid Executive in a statement. Ayuso has detailed to the actor his plans to make the region “a great epicenter for Hispanic musicians, with special attention to emerging talent.” For his part, Antonio Banderas explained to the president his agreement with the composer Andrew Lloyd Weber (author of great musicals such as ‘Cats’, ‘Evita’, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ or ‘Sunset Boulevard’ ) to produce musicals in Spanish.
Musicals
From the Madrid Government they have highlighted that musicals are one of the bases of the cultural sector of the Community of Madrid, being the Gran Vía the great reference European of this genre in Spanish. Until 2020, of the 160 million euros billed per year by the different theater disciplines, 110 came from musicals, “becoming an economic engine in the sector.”
In this sense, they have remarked that “currently and after the pandemic, musicals in Madrid have once again become a cultural reference and one of the most important tourist attractions for both national and international visitors.”
During the meeting, which lasted an hour and a half, Banderas also shared with the president his immediate projects, some of which will take place in Madrid. Both have agreed to keep in touch to keep abreast of mutual initiatives, with the intention of collaborating to develop them
