‘Dolphin climber’ arrested, police call for threats to stop

The woman who climbed into the sea near Zandvoort on Tuesday afternoon on the back of a beaked whale has been arrested and questioned. She turned herself in yesterday afternoon, after the police had called on her to do so. The woman is suspected of violating the Animals Act, the police said.

The police do not want to say much about the case, but do say that the woman is suspected of ‘harming animals’. They also call on people on the internet to stop ‘making threats on social media’.

Online Threats

on images circulating on the internet shows a woman lying in the sea trying to climb on the animal. The dolphin swam close to shore and had just been pushed back into the sea by other bathers. The incident caused a lot of fuss and hateful reactions on social media.

The police point out that threatening people on the internet is also punishable by law. The police would not say whether the threats are being investigated and to what extent they are included in the ongoing investigation.
