Changeable course of the game – moderate level of play
Because the DHB team then made a few unprepared throws, the Russians came back. It took five minutes before it was 10:10 again. Now it was Gislason who needed to speak after almost twenty minutes of play. The announcements by the Icelander obviously paid off, because the German team was more careful with the ball than their opponents and threw in a well-deserved 16:12 at the break.
But it was a changeable game. Less than 90 seconds were played in the second round, when it was only 16:15 because the Germans missed several free throwing opportunities and didn’t always work consistently against the man at the back. The Russians, for their part, now also covered more offensively – which provoked one or the other mistake. This game did not have the very high level of other games in this tournament. After 43 minutes, Gislason had seen enough again and called on his team, who also repeatedly quarreled with the referees, to concentrate more.
Russia submits – Germany equalizes
With a 24:24 it finally went into the last twelve minutes, which the DHB selection denied with veteran Johannes Bitter between the posts. The Russians consistently scored a goal and the Germans equalized. This series lasted until the final minute. There Patrick Zieker scored beautifully with a Kempa trick to make it 30:29. They survived the remaining ten seconds unscathed – and were visibly relieved.
