200 m women: Wessolly in the semifinals without a chance
Jessica-Bianca Wessolly has reached her World Cup semi-final goal. More was not possible for the Mannheim native against strong competition. The 25-year-old got off the block badly in her 200m semifinal and finished seventh in her race in 23.33 seconds.
The fastest in the final on Friday (4:35 a.m. CEST) was Shericka Jackson (21.67), the best of the year, and 100m world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (21.82) also made a strong impression. Although Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah missed out on direct qualification in 21.97, she advanced with the fifth fastest time overall as one of the two best timers.
The three Jamaicans had won gold, silver and bronze in the 100m in order of Fraser-Pryce, Jackson and Thompson-Herah.
400 m hurdles women: Vorlauf-Aus for Krafzik
Carolina Krafzik missed the semifinals by 15 hundredths in the 400m hurdles. The German champion, who has been struggling with injury problems this season, finished fifth in her heat in 56.24 seconds and was bitterly disappointed. Like at the Olympics in Tokyo and at the World Championships in Doha, she wanted to reach the semi-finals.
The big favorite Sydney McLaughlin from the USA, who improved her own world record to 51.41 seconds in June, used her race for an intensive jogging session, but still easily won her heat in 53.95 seconds. Dutch Olympic bronze medalist Femke Bol posted the fastest time (53.90). Defending champion Dalilah Muhammad (USA) also advanced safely (54.45).
Finals without German participation
Without German participation, the four decisions are made during the night. In the women’s high jump, world indoor champion Yaroslava Mahuchich could win gold for the Ukraine team.
The men’s discus throw, 1,500 m and 400 m hurdles are also at stake for the title. Olympic champion and world record holder Karsten Warholm from Norway wants to become world champion there for the third time, although he was initially injured this season.
