?? NVIDIA and Meta collaborate again
?? RSC supercomputer is said to be faster and more powerful
?? Important step towards the metaverse
Facebook has reached an important milestone on the way towards the metaverse. With the support of NVIDIA, a new AI supercomputer was built for Meta, namely the “AI Research SuperCluster” supercomputer, which is intended to bring completely new possibilities to the field of artificial intelligence at Meta. Both companies informed about this on Monday in respective blog entries.
NVIDIA & Meta: Not the first collaboration
It’s not the first supercomputer that NVIDIA and Facebook came up with together. As early as 2017, the first generation of such a computer was developed, which has over 22,000 NVIDIA V100 Tensor Core GPUs and was used in particular for training artificial intelligence. In the meantime, however, the demands on the algorithms have increased. For example, Facebook explains that longer and larger videos now have to be checked for dangerous content, which in turn demands more from the underlying technology.
The RSC supercomputer
In 2020, the idea was born to build a completely new supercomputer that would have more power and speed so that even more complex problems on the way to the metaverse could be solved. A new data center was created specifically for this purpose, which should have over 16,000 NVIDIA DGX A100 systems by the end of this year. Meta hopes to use this new AI supercomputer to “build whole new AI systems that can, for example, provide real-time voice translation from a large group of people who all speak different languages, allowing them to easily interact with each other during a research project work together or play an AR game together,” as Facebook explains in the blog post.
Faster and more powerful
As NVIDIA writes in turn, the new RSC computer is three times faster than the older model and image analysis jobs can even be processed 20 times faster. According to Meta, once the data center is expanded to its full capacity, it will be among the fastest supercomputers in the world. It is used to feed AI systems with trillions of data sets in order to train them for various uses, such as analyzing texts, images, videos or conversations. The development of areas of application in the field of augmented reality is also possible. “Ultimately, the work performed using the RSC supercomputer will pave the way towards technologies for the next great computing platform – the Metaverse – in which AI applications and products will play a major role,” he said the Facebook group.
Here’s how NVIDIA stock and meta paper reacted
NVIDIA shares reacted largely unperturbed by the news in Monday trading and ultimately exited NASDAQ trading with a minimal discount of 0.01 percent at $233.72. Meta shares, meanwhile, rose 1.83 percent to $308.71.
