EM | Former world champion Peter predicts “real top game”

Former world champion and Real Madrid captain Babett Peter believes the German and Spanish soccer players are capable of “everything” at the European Championships in England.

“It’s going to be a real top game. And it’s an important duel because it’s not just about getting through, but possibly also about winning the group,” said the 118-time DFB international in an interview on the German Football Association’s website. The German women will meet Spain in the second group game on Tuesday (9:00 p.m. CEST/ARD and DAZN) at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Peter ended her career this summer. The 35-year-old was world champion in 2007, European champion in 2009 and Olympic champion in 2016. She last played for Real for two years, before that for VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FFC Frankfurt and Turbine Potsdam. “I’m a fan of this team. I know a lot of international players personally or have played against them in matches against FC Barcelona,” she said of the Spanish team. “They definitely have huge potential in the squad. But I also believe Germany is capable of anything.”

The DFB women praised Peter for their 4-0 opening win against Denmark: “It was a very confident and strong performance. Really a remarkable achievement.”
