Berlin’s FDP faction leader wants to turn off the lights at the Brandenburg Gate and other sights at night. Sebastian Czaja (39) wants the state to save energy because of the impending energy crisis.
“The Federal Government and the Senate must examine what savings effect it brings if you only illuminate sights until midnight,” says Czaja.
“Why does the radio tower still have to be illuminated from below after midnight? Other examples are the Red Town Hall, the Brandenburg Gate, the Victory Column, and the Charlottenburg Town Hall,” says Czaja, who himself completed an apprenticeship in electrical engineering.
“The Reichstag dome does not have to be illuminated all night. There is savings potential across Germany and the state should set a good example,” Berlin’s FDP leader told the BZ
Where safety is a concern, such as underpasses, the lights must stay on. You can’t switch off all 23,000 gas lanterns either, but you can quickly switch to LED. Small wind turbines on roofs can also be allowed. He himself has converted the lighting at home to LED. “Of course, my wife and I also have a 9-euro ticket and use it.”
