Just like in her previous matches, De Groot hardly ran into problems in the Wimbledon final. At times she drove her opponent to despondency. With a 5-1 lead for De Groot in the first set, Kamiji shook her head after another point for the Dutch wheelchair tennis player, who eventually took the first set 6-4.
In the second set, De Groot pushed on towards her fourth Wimbledon title and her fifteenth grand slam in total. She has also won the Australian Open and US Open four times. Roland Garros is to her name three times. The 25-year-old De Groot won 55 matches in a row and has been at the top of the world ranking since.
Last year she managed to complete the ‘golden slam’: winning all grand slams and gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Steffi Graf was the last to succeed, in 1988, in regular tennis. De Groot will also play in the doubles final, together with Aniek van Koot. Again Kamiji is the opponent. She plays with the American Dana Mathewson.
