Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff about fan behavior: ‘Personal attack on driver’ | Motorsport

In England, Max Verstappen was booed by some of the British supporters. On Friday in Austria, some of the Dutch fans cheered loudly when Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) crashed.

“Both examples do not really show sportsmanship,” says Wolff. “When there’s applause after a driver’s crash, you have to ask yourself if you understand the sport. Booing isn’t good either. We all fight as teams for a good result and are not happy when we lose, but booing is a personal attack on a driver. Fans should ask themselves how they would feel if it happened to them. We love the fans, we want them to be here and they’re passionate, but it shouldn’t get personal.”

Hamilton and his teammate George Russell crashed during qualifying on Friday. The damage to both cars is significant. For example, the entire chassis of Hamilton’s car is replaced.
