In the course of next week, a meeting is also planned between Jouke’s family and the officer who shot. In that conversation, the family wants to clarify why the shooting officer acted in this way.
Shelved
The Public Prosecution Service has now dropped the case against Jouke. “On the basis of a careful and at the same time rapid investigation, the Public Prosecution Service has come to the conclusion in retrospect that there are no leads for prosecuting this young man,” the Public Prosecution Service said in a press release.
The investigation into two other people who were arrested during the protest on Tuesday, a 46-year-old man from the municipality of Opsterland and a 34-year-old man from the municipality of Heerenveen, is still ongoing. They are still suspicious. They were initially suspected of attempted manslaughter, but that was later revised. It is not clear what they are still suspected of. At the protest, shots were fired by the police, both aimed and as a warning, hitting Jouke’s trigger.
The Public Prosecution Service reports that the investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Department into the use of firearms is ongoing and is separate from the investigation into possible criminal behavior of the two remaining suspects. “The Public Prosecution Service cannot and should not prejudge the independent investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Service.”
Compensation and declaration
For Jouke’s lawyer Robert Snorn it is already clear that the agents have made a mistake. “They just miscalculated here. There was absolutely no imminent danger or threat. There was no need to shoot. If the bullet had gone a little bit to the left, it could have just hit Jouke. Fortunately that didn’t happen. I’m very curious what went on in the minds of these agents,” he said earlier today against this site.
Snorn announced that he is preparing compensation if the case is dropped. This compensation may then be higher, because according to the counsel there are ‘special circumstances’. In addition, there will probably be a report of attempted manslaughter against the officers involved, says Jouke’s mother. “He was very dazed when he came home last night. Now he is especially happy to be back home. We’re all going to get over the shock now. Then we will discuss the next steps with our lawyer. We think filing a complaint is a very logical step.”
The parents of Jouke’s family stated on Thursday evening in the TV program On 1 that they want to proceed with the complaint. “Because he deliberately shot your child. You can’t afford to shoot a trigger like that,” said the boy’s father. His mother thinks that the officer should be taken ‘off the field’ and take up a different kind of position within the police force.
Conversation with police officer
Jouke would very much like to speak to the officer, who is currently sick at home, according to Gery Veldhuis, the chief commissioner of the Regional Police Unit of the Northern Netherlands. ,,I really want to talk to the police officer, I really want to talk to him. He wants to talk, next week we would make an appointment,” said the boy, who denies that he has run into anyone or was warned by the police.
Veldhuis had an extensive conversation with the officer on Thursday, ‘who is not doing well. He is affected by the situation, he is home sick. He also did not want Jouke to be in such a situation that he would have been injured, or worse,” he told the newspaper. Leeuwarder Courant†
According to the chief commissioner, it was the intention of the officers on Tuesday evening to stop the farmers in the tractors and to fine them. An emergency ordinance had been issued in the area. “What they then see is that tractors want to avoid the fine situation. This created a very confusing and dangerous situation for my employees.” According to Veldhuis, the employee who shot was afraid that his colleagues would be in great danger.

Talk of misunderstanding
The 16-year-old Jouke and the two others were killed on Tuesday evening arrested on suspicion of attempted murder† According to the police, “tractor drivers tried to drive into officers and service vehicles.” According to Jouke’s lawyer, there is no evidence of this for the time being. He said on the basis of all images and Jouke’s statement that he expected the case to be dropped. “There seems to be a misunderstanding here.”
In a written statement, from which this site was allowed to quote with permission, 16-year-old Jouke states that he finds it ‘incomprehensible’ that the police fired. ‘The images also show very clearly that I’m not doing anything wrong. I’m lucky that I survived.” The teenager was shot at by the police when Jouke wanted to leave the farmers’ protest with his tractor.
