Wimbledon, Djokovic-Norrie: the men’s semifinal from 2.30pm

Wimbledon Good Friday is the day of the men’s semi-finals. The first, at 14.30 Italian (live Sky Sport), will be the one played by the Serbian Novak Djokovic and the British Cameron Norrie, while the one between the Spanish Rafael Nadal and the Australian Nick Kyrgios will not be played due to the abdominal injury at the Spaniard who yesterday announced his retirement.

Between Novak Djokovic and Cameron Norrie there is only one precedent and it is the one won by the Serbian in the round robin of the ATP Finals in Turin 2021 (6-2 6-1, with Norrie taking the place of the injured Tsitsipas). Norrie is aiming for the first career Grand Slam final which would make him the second Briton of the Open Era in the final at Wimbledon after Andy Murray and the third Briton to reach a Grand Slam final after also Greg Rusedski, Canadian by birth, finalist at the US Open 1997 . Novak Djokovic, on the other hand, is looking for the final number 8 at Wimbledon (second of all time after Federer’s 12) and the number 32 in the Grand Slams to beat Roger Federer at 31. The Serbian has won 6 editions at Wimbledon of which the last 3, that of 2018, 2019 and 2021. Nole’s last defeat at Wimbledon dates back to retiring in the 2017 quarter-finals against Tomas Berdych. Since then he has won all 26 games played at Wimbledon: 15 in three sets, 8 in four sets and 3 in five sets (Nadal 2018, Federer 2019 and Sinner 2022). The Serbian’s series is the fourth in Wimbledon history after Borg’s 41, Federer’s 40 and Sampras’s 31. Djokovic could be the third over 35 to reach the final at Wimbledon after Ken Rosewall and Roger Federer.
