The former javelin world champion Johannes Vetter has to cancel his start at the World Championships because of a shoulder injury.
The 29-year-old top athlete from Offenburg initially only interrupted the season at the end of May due to an inflammation in his shoulder. He had a wildcard for the World Cup. For the home EM three weeks later in Munich, a norm fulfillment is still required.
The U23 European champion over 100 meters, Lilly Kaden, cannot travel to the USA either. The Dortmund woman was nominated for the 200 meters. This reduces the World Cup squad to 77 starters.
Already the third rejection of a medal contender
The German record holder Vetter traveled to the Olympic Games in Tokyo last season after a series of 90-meter throws as the gold favorite. In the final he was only ninth. The athletic thrower, with his powerful throwing style, couldn’t cope with the soft ground on the runway.
It is already the third World Cup cancellation of a medal contender. Previously, the Olympic silver medalist in walking, Jonathan Hilbert, had to pass as a result of a corona disease. Due to a lack of training, heptathlete Carolin Schäfer, who came second at the 2017 World Championships, decided not to start in Eugene. The European champions Christin Hussong (javelin throw) and Gesa Krause (3000 meter obstacle) were recently absent from the German championships in Berlin due to illness. However, both were nominated for the world title fights by the DLV.
