In contrast to the rained-out first session, it remained dry during the second training session. Ferrari driver Sainz went around in 1.28.942. Compared to other weekends, the ranking was shaken up a bit. Lewis Hamilton set the second fastest time in front of his own audience, followed by compatriot Lando Norris (McLaren). Verstappen’s fastest time was a 1.29.149. So he was two tenths slower than Sainz. His teammate Charles Leclerc set the fifth fastest time at an appropriate distance.
“It’s always a bit tricky if you can’t drive in the first practice,” said Verstappen. “Normally you build up one day more. It may not have been ideal, but at the same time we don’t have any major problems. We know what to work on. We will try to do that tonight, but on Saturday it will rain and the conditions will be different again. All in all it was okay today. Not great, but not too bad either. We are there.”
It was clear that the bouncing of many a car was still unresolved. This was evident in the fast corners at Silverstone. From the Grand Prix of France, in three weeks’ time, the new technical guideline of the FIA regarding the so-called porposing and too much bouncing is no longer allowed for safety reasons.
