At least three dead and dozens injured in US train accident | Abroad

At least three people have been killed and dozens injured in a train accident in the US state of Missouri. At least seven trainsets derailed after the train collided with a garbage truck at an unguarded level crossing.

The accident happened near the village of Mendon, about 100 miles northeast of Kansas City. The train was on a two-day journey from Los Angeles to Chicago and had 243 passengers and 12 crew on board at the time of the accident, Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods said.

One of the dead was the driver of the garbage truck, the other two dead were on board the train. Hospitals in the area have already reported at least 40 injured, but the number could rise further.

It is the second time this week that a US passenger train has hit a vehicle. On Sunday, a California train collided with a passenger car at an unguarded railroad crossing. Three occupants of the car were killed and two other occupants were seriously injured. There were no injuries on the train at the time.
