Jane by Charlotte: the intimate documentary review

JANE BY CHARLOTTE
Genre: Intimate documentary ✦✦✦
Direction: Charlotte Gainsbourg. With Jane Birkin.

“I film you to look at you,” the daughter declares to her mother. “You intimidated me as a child,” she replies. Recalling the moment in which for the last time she asked her permission to touch that body, close to independence.

Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin.

Many more are the revelations in this little treatise of filial love with ghosts: Serge Gainsbourg, husband and father, and Kate Barry, daughter and sister who died too soon.

It is not irrelevant that Jane and Charlotte are both celebrities, but the path that leads from the Tokyo concert to the studio where Charlotte photographs Jane, to the private garden or to the Serge’s house-museum where everything, even the contents of the fridge, has remained as it wasdoes not risk overexposure.

In this modest and whispered film, the camera filter still works a miracle and the passing of time has the rhythm of a sad song.
