IOC deprives boxing federation of control over boxing tournament at Games in Paris | NOW

The international boxing federation IBA will not have control over the boxing tournament at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. The boxing federation has been in a deep financial and administrative crisis for some time and has had to deal with manipulations in the arbitration.

“The decision follows ongoing and still serious issues surrounding the IBA, such as leadership, arbitration and the jury system,” the IOC said after a meeting. “The qualifiers for the Games and the games at the Games will not be held under the direction of the IBA.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had already suspended the association for the Tokyo 2020 Games in 2019 and declined the organization of the Olympic boxing tournament. The sport was also previously not selected for the preliminary program of the 2028 Olympic Games.

The IOC had previously reacted “particularly displeased” to the procedure surrounding the election of the president of the International Boxing Federation. The Russian Umar Kremlev was recently reappointed in Istanbul.

That happened after the Dutch opponent Boris van der Vorst was told for unclear reasons that he was not allowed to compete. Earlier this month, the sports tribunal CAS ruled in favor of Van der Vorst in his appeal against that exclusion.
