Evenepoel is Belgian Time Trial Champion
Evenepoel clocked in after 34.8 kilometers in a phenomenal 40:22.902, good for an average of 51.71 kilometers per hour. He was almost 37 seconds faster than teammate and defending champion Yves Lampaert. The bronze medal went to Victor Campenaerts, who got more than a minute and a half. Rune Herregodts was fourth at 1:55.6 and Frederik Frison fifth at 1:57.6.
“I was looking forward to this championship. Every title is important for every rider and certainly for a time trialist. It is and remains a separate discipline. If you ride slowly with that special bike, it is still heavy and you give, like I do today , the full pound, then it is a lot more difficult”, laughed Evenepoel. “Despite the somewhat short distance, we were given a pretty difficult course today. It was always turning and turning here. You always had to focus. Not easy, certainly not on the parts where you could pass full. but where you got the wind in front of you. And then there was the heat,” continued Evenepoel.
