30 seconds before the final whistle, SC Magdeburg started the emotional championship party, at which handball legend Andy Schmid was also celebrated once again to say goodbye to the Bundesliga.
With a 37:34 (20:19) against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, Bennet Wiegert’s team, who was named “Coach of the Season”, ended an outstanding season and took it from the hands of Saxony-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff as a reward receiving the championship trophy for the second time since 2001. “We were all looking forward to this day. Everyone should enjoy it,” said Wiegert.
With 64:4 points, Magdeburg ended the 2021/22 season as the sovereign title holder ahead of record champions THW Kiel (58:10), who, like the champions, will play in the Champions League next season. After the jubilation ceremony on the floor, the champions went to the town hall in the city center for a big party with around 20,000 fans. “When I see this exuberant joy, everything was worth it. I’m incredibly happy for the team and I’m proud to be the coach of this squad,” said Wiegert.
Lindberg is only 146 goals short of the goal record
“It’s fantastic,” said goalscorer Omar Ingi Magnusson. The Icelander scored six times but was overshadowed by Schmid in the season finale. Mannheim’s star director came up trumps again in his 400th and last Bundesliga game. The 38-year-old Swiss, who was ceremoniously farewell before kick-off and even chanted by the SCM fans, scored 13 times. “I’m proud that I was able to play here again. It’s one of the best handball halls. I enjoyed it,” said Schmid.
