Beach volleyball, World Cup, Rome crowns Duda-Ana Patricia and Mol-Sorum

The Brazilians and Norwegians are new world champions. Both pairs to the first win

Brazil and Norway. The World Cup that ended tonight on the central Italian Forum crowns two brand new queen couples: the Brazilian Duda-Ana Patricia and the Norwegians Mol-Sorum. A day of celebration for sport and for the city of Rome, invaded by Brazilian, Norwegian and Canadian supporters.

I love you Rome

In women, Brazil triumphs, for the sixth time in history. “I love you Rome”. This is the cry of the Duda / Ana Patricia couple after lifting the World Cup to the sky. The Brazilians, number two of the seed of the tournament, beat the Canadians Bukovec / Brandie by 2-0 (17-21; 19-21) and climbed to the top of the world. They reached the final after defeating the Swiss Heidrich / Bergé-Depré, returning the trophy to Brazil five years after winning The Hague 2015 (the couple was Bednarczuk / Seixas). It is the first victory for the Brazilian couple who got back together this year after winning the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing in 2014 and then becoming two Under 21 world champions in 2016 and 2017. Then their paths parted and Duda in paired with Agatha was one of the protagonists of the circuit, but without winning the World Cup, until Tokyo last year. Now the couple’s goal is Paris 2024 and the start, with this world gold, was with barrels. Rome is good for Brazil: in the edition of eleven years ago, Felisberta Silva / França triumphed. In the women’s field it is the sixth green-gold victory, after Los Angeles 1997, Marseille 1999, Klagernfurt 2001, Rome 2011, The Hague 2015. Bronze went to the German Muller-Tillmann over the Swiss Heidrich-Vergé-Depré, forced to forfeit due to injury

In the men’s field it is a “treble” for Norway which becomes the reigning World, European and Olympic Champion. The Scandinavians beat the Brazilian couple Renato / Vitor Felipe (who had killed the Italian couple Nicolai / Cottafava in the second round, ed) by 2-0 (21-15; 21-16). For the Mol / Sørum duo – and for Norway – it is the first world victory. The Norwegians had reached the bronze medal on two occasions: Klagenfurt 2001 (with Hojdalen-Kiemperud) and Hamburg 2019. A victory that establishes the international domination of the couple (24 and 26 years for them): four Europeans, the finals of the international circuit , the Olympics, the only thing missing was the world championship gold to celebrate with friends and family present in the stands at the Foro Italico. “We are very happy with this world title won in front of so many fans here at the Foro Italico”, the Norwegian couple’s comment at the end of the race. Bronze to the Brazilians André / George (2-1 over the Americans Schalk / Brunner).
