Eggert/Benecken win European title and overall World Cup, winter sports | Tobogganing – tobogganing – winter sports

The duo has also shown excellent form two weeks before the Winter Games in Beijing. The Thuringians won the most important race of the season so far on Saturday (January 22nd, 2022) ahead of the Bavarian Olympic champions Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt.

On the only artificial ice track on the calendar, the two German flagship duos were separated by 0.113 seconds after two runs. Eggert/Benecken won their fourth European Championship title and the sixth crystal globe for the World Cup. In both statistics they are ahead of Wendl and Arlt (3/4) – but Bayern have always been ahead on the most important stage: Wendl/Arlt won Olympic gold in 2014 and 2018, for Eggert/Benecken there is only Olympic bronze in 2018 Statistics.

Thanks to Wendl/Arlt

“It was definitely nerve-racking that we were able to do well in the first run. All in all it was a great team effort, and we’re overjoyed that we got help from the two Tobis.”, said Toni Eggert in the ARD sports show. With their second place, Wendl/Arlt kept the Latvians Andris and Juris Sics at a distance in terms of the overall ranking. “So we can now travel to Beijing with confidence”said Eggert.

Benecken is aiming for a podium finish there: “It doesn’t matter what the color of the medal is at the end. Even without gold, our career is pretty well rounded, but when I look at both doubles games, I have to say: we’ve never had such a strong German team as we are at the moment. If we’re both on the podium in Beijing, we’ll sign it.”
