Schumacher drives his best qualifying – Verstappen on pole

Status: 06/18/2022 11:22 p.m

Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen starts the Canadian Grand Prix from first place on the grid. Mick Schumacher and Fernando Alonso also drove outstandingly.

Red Bull star Verstappen relegated the two Spaniards Alonso (Alpine) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) to places on Saturday (June 18, 2022) in qualifying in Montreal on a drying track. For Dutchman Verstappen it is the 15th pole position of his Formula 1 career and the second of the season.

“I don’t expect a clear race. But I’m super happy with pole – no mistakes made, everything decided correctly”said Verstappen. Veteran Alonso (40) said confidently: “A great feeling, an incredible weekend. The car was great in the wet. We’ll attack Max – in the first corner already.”

Schumacher strong sixth

Mick Schumacher had by far the best qualifying in Formula 1. The son of record world champion Michael Schumacher put Haas in sixth place. Schumacher was happy: “It felt very good from the first lap. I really enjoy it in such conditions. Of course it would be great for the race to stay in this position.”

Verstappen’s World Cup rival Charles Leclerc (Monaco/Ferrari) has to start the ninth race of the season on Sunday (8 p.m. / live ticker at sportschau.de) from 19th place due to an engine change.

Vettel doesn’t even make Q2

It was catastrophic for Sebastian Vettel – he retired in the first qualifying round and thus missed Q2. On the wet track, the four-time Formula 1 World Champion couldn’t get past 17th place. “That can not be”Vettel radioed to his pits completely disappointed and said afterwards helplessly: “I have no idea, it must have been something. Up until qualifying, things were actually going well for us in Canada.”
