The 34-year-old from Darmstadt won her first round game against former Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza from Spain 7:6 (10:8), 6:4. After a hard-fought first set, Petkovic made an early break in the second round and remained confident on his own serve.

“I’m really happy, I played a very good second set,” said Petkovic after the win over her fifth-seeded opponent. In the round of the top 16, she meets Alexandra Sasnowitsch from Belarus at the event, which is endowed with 709,000 euros.

Jule Niemeier, like Tamara Korpatsch the day before, was eliminated in the first round. Niemeier lost to Olympic champion Belinda Bencic 4:6, 7:5, 3:6. In the third round, the 22-year-old from Dortmund gave up her serve twice. The world number 96 missed. the revenge for the three-set defeat against the Swiss in Berlin a year ago. The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner Angelique Kerber decided not to take part in Berlin in preparation for Wimbledon.

After failing to qualify for the main draw in singles, Sabine Lisicki reached the quarter-finals in doubles competition. The former Wimbledon finalist from Berlin won alongside Bianca Andreescu from Canada 7:5, 6:4 against the Chinese duo Xu Yifan/Yang Zhaoxuan. Lisicki recently celebrated her comeback after a year and a half injury break.
