JD Sports is planning a mega store in Hamburg’s Überseequartier

The shopping center operator Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW) has presented another well-known tenant for its Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier project. The company announced on Tuesday that the British retail chain JD Sports will open a “mega store” with an area of around 800 square meters in the shopping center currently under construction in the Hanseatic city’s HafenCity. The clothing retailers Zara and Breuninger had previously been presented as future tenants.

“With this extraordinary mega store from JD Sports, we are ensuring further differentiation of the brand mix in Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier,” explained Anna Laura Riemann, Portfolio Leasing Manager at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, in a statement. “The fact that JD Sports will open a large-scale store in the upcoming flagship destination and implement its new, innovative store concept once again underlines the attractiveness and appeal of the location.” Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier will “step by step become the first address for retailers who want to offer flagship formats and special brand experiences in physical retail,” emphasized Riemann.

With the planned reopening in Hamburg, URW is continuing its strategic partnership with JD Sports. The company had already announced in March that the retailer would open a mega store in Oberhausen’s Westfield Centro after moving to larger premises in the fall. Customers in Hamburg will have to wait a little longer: Überseequartier, in the construction of which URW says it is investing more than one billion euros, is not scheduled to open until the second half of 2023.
