Major operation for bird shelter: 150 birds released at once

The fact that birds are released from the Krommenie wildlife sanctuary is not very special. But 150 (!) at a time, they don’t do that very often here. Recently, many birds were brought in that were injured or had something wrong.

This is the right moment to release them, says Nina van Hest-Schenk. She is a manager at the wildlife sanctuary in Krommenie. Moreover, the space is also necessary for other birds that come in.

Before they were released, all the birds were ringed so that they can be identified later. All cages and bins are placed in the polder of Uitgeest. Once it’s time to leave, many animals seem to hesitate for a moment: some need an encouraging nudge.

Months ago, a volunteer brought a weakened goose to the shelter himself. “I just put it back myself. Really nice to see, that’s what you do it for in the end.” The birds Nina released are gone in no time. “You still hear them but you don’t see them anymore. That’s the way we want it.”
