Gianni Vermeersch will come back “to win for himself”
“I am very happy for Oscar”, Vermeersch said afterwards. “He came out of the Giro in good condition. But I also had very good legs today. Legs to win. As a team we had aimed for a very good result and with places one and two we succeeded very well. I call this fantastic. We also controlled the race the whole time. Fabio Van Den Bossche was with the group with Tim Wellens, Florian Vermeersch and Taco van der Hoorn. Then I tried it a few times, but they let me “Don’t ride. The wind didn’t make it any less difficult today. I should have closed a gap quite early in the race when a group of seven riders left and there was no one from the team. After that it went as planned.”
Oscar Riesebeek remained very calm after his first professional victory. “Riesebeek is a cool boy,” said Vermeersch. “He is always ready and always wants to work for the team. That is why I am so satisfied for him. I enjoyed the whole day. Together with the Antwerp Port Epic, this is one of my favorite races. Of course I have my background as a cyclocross rider “Maybe that’s why this race suits me so well. I spent a whole day here in a playground. I’ve been third here twice and now I finish second. So I have to come back again to win.”
