Ex-FCSP Captain
After leaving FC St. Pauli, Philipp Ziereis found his new club in Austria. Born in the Upper Palatinate, who spent nine years at the Kiezklub in Hamburg, he joins LASK in the Bundesliga. It was “time for a change of scenery,” the 29-year-old central defender commented on the move. The contract in Germany is expiring, the new working paper in Linz is valid until 2025.
“With Philipp Ziereis we were able to gain an experienced central defender who will give us stability in defence,” explained LASK sports director Radovan Vujanovic. “Philipp was not only able to convince us in terms of sport. His personality will also be a real asset to our team off the pitch. We are proud that he chose LASK despite other offers from abroad.”
Ziereis among the longest-serving St. Pauli professionals – LASK has “a lot planned”
Captain Ziereis was not only the second-longest-serving professional in the FCSP squad last season at St. Pauli (behind Christopher Buchtmann, ten years), but is also one of the top players by contract term over the past few decades. Since the beginning of the 1980s, only eight players have had more professional years with the brown and whites, including Buchtmann and club legends such as Klaus Thomforde, André Trulsen or Ziereis’ former teammate Jan-Philipp Kalla. In terms of playing time, however, Ziereis does not come close to most of those club icons. During his time at St. Pauli since 2013, the former Regensburg home-grown player was repeatedly absent, even for longer periods.
Meanwhile, LASK has “a lot planned” according to Ziereis – including the return to the European football stage. Ziereis summed it up: “I’m very grateful to St. Pauli, but I’m all the happier to be hired by another traditional club. I’ve heard a lot of good things, especially that the LASK fans are in no way inferior to those in St. Pauli.”
